Citizenship Now! has offices throughout the five boroughs, and we are currently looking to hire an administrative assistant and a paralegal at our Hostos Community College Immigration Center in the Bronx, starting immediately. In addition, we are looking for a volunteer paralegal to help at our Flushing Immigration Center in Queens, starting immediately.

PART-TIME ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT (PAID)
Location: Hostos Community College (427 Walton Ave, T-501, Bronx, NY 10451)

Job Description:  The administrative assistant will help both the staff attorney and paralegal with overall administration of services provided at the center. This includes duties such as case management, records retention, and office supplies management. The assistant will perform administrative activities and clerical duties to ensure the efficiency of the center and is responsible for tracking and monitoring case files. The assistant will ensure that all participants visiting the center are properly served and that services rendered are accurately recorded.

Qualifications:
  • Associates degree or 2 years of experience working in administrative or similar field.
  • Fluency in second language, preferably Spanish or French.
  • Excellent customer service, communications, and interpersonal skills.
  • Willing to work on weekends and evenings if necessary.
  • Must be able to operate multi-line telephone, fax, copier and other office equipment.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, specifically Word, Excel and Access.
  • Must have pleasant phone manner and present professional attitude to clients and staff.  
Salary: $15.00/hour

PART-TIME PARALEGAL POSITION (PAID)
Location: Hostos Community College (427 Walton Ave, T-501, Bronx, NY 10451)

Job Description: Provides paralegal support to Staff Attorney. Under direction of supervising attorney, provides direct services to participants seeking assistance with naturalization applications. The paralegal will demonstrate good research, investigative, counseling and interviewing skills, and have knowledge of immigration laws, concepts, practices, forms and procedures.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Legal/Paralegal Studies or related field and/or 2 years relevant experience in immigration law.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team.
  • Ability to work efficiently and under time constraints to meet deadlines.
  • Commitment to protecting the rights of low-income immigrants.
  • Knowledge of immigration law is strongly desired.
  • Experience preparing immigration forms strongly desired.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel and ability to navigate the internet.
  • Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without supervision.
  • Ability to handle and resolve recurring problems in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Proficiency in English and second language, Spanish and/or French strongly preferred.
  • Ability to document and identify appropriate immigration laws to the supervising attorney and understand legal terminology.
  • Willing to work on Saturdays if necessary.
  • Excellent verbal, writing, research and computer skills.
  • The ideal candidate must be detail-oriented, highly flexible and self-motivated.
Salary: $18.00/hour

CUNY Citizenship Now! at Flushing Immigration Center
 
VOLUNTEER OFFICE ASSISTANT
Location: Flushing Immigration Center (39-07 Prince St., Suite 2B, Flushing, NY 11354)
  
Commitment per week: Mondays and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, with some flexibility
 
Duration of Commitment: At least 3 months
 
Volunteer Duties Description: Under the supervision of the Citizenship Now! legal staff, the volunteer will assist in the overall operation of our services provided at the Flushing office by engaging with participants, making appointments, confirming appointments, making copies of legal documents, and all necessary duties as requested by the staff. The volunteer will gain valuable working experience in the field of immigration law.
 
Qualifications:
  • Must be able to operate telephone, fax, copier and other office equipment.
  • Must be computer proficient.
  • Must have a pleasant phone manner and present a professional attitude towards participants and staff.
  • The ideal candidate will have the ability to establish priorities and show initiative.
  • Must be fluent in Spanish.

CCNY Winter Study Abroad Programs

CCNY STUDY ABROAD WINTER 2017 PROGRAMS
Application Deadline October 28th, 2016
  1. CCNY/UNTREF Language and Culture in Buenos Aires, Argentina  (January 2nd – 21st, 2016)
    1. Students will stay with local host families.
    2. Students will earn up to 6 credits in combination of Spanish as a Second Language, Human Rights in Argentina, Neoliberalism and New Social Movements, Cultural History of Argentina and Latin America.
    3. The last three courses may be taken in English and also for graduate credits.
    4. There will be excursions to museums, an Argentine Gaucho ranch and tango lessons.
    5. Program cost: $1,350 plus CUNY tuition (3-6 credits). Program cost includes two meals and some excursions.  
  2. CCNY/Universidad VERITAS Winter Program in San José, Costa Rica (January 2nd – 24th, 2016)
    1. Students will stay with local host families.
    2. Students will earn 6 credits in Short Term Program Tropical Marine Biology. Course is taught in English.
    3. Students will have time for excursions in one of the most biodiverse countries in the world.
    4. Program cost: $2,000 plus CUNY tuition (6 credits). Program cost includes airport pick-up, homestay accommodations, meals, some excursions, and class material.   
  3. CCNY New Delhi, India- Multicultural Education program (January 1st  - 13th, 2016)
    1. Students will examine India within a socio-cultural-historical framework.
    2. Students will meet with educators, teachers and students as well as attend lectures by guest speakers from throughout India.
    3. Students will visit an array of schools, universities, an urban slum, sites of historical and architectural significance, places of worship, and art museums and galleries to provide a deeper understanding of contemporary life in urban India.
    4. Program cost: $1,200 plus CUNY tuition (3 credits). Program cost includes housing, meals, transportation and excursions.
  4. CCNY Oaxaca, Mexico- Multicultural Education program (January 1st  - 15th, 2016)
    1. Students will visit elementary and secondary schools and speak with educators, students, and families.
    2. Students will tour indigenous communities to learn about the local languages, customs and practices, artistic traditions and school-going experiences of students.
    3. Program cost: $800 plus CUNY-tuition (3 graduate credits).  Program cost includes room, board, meals, and excursions.
  5. CCNY/Global Ecovillage Network, Dakar –International Service-Learning Senegal (January 2nd – 22nd, 2016)
    1. Students will engage in understanding the role of the ecovillage movement in protecting the ecological, social and mental health of traditional African villages.
    2. Students will test best modern solutions while reforesting landscapes stripped of trees for firewood, stabilizing water retention systems, protecting crops with organic pesticides, removing plastic bags that litter the landscape.
    3. Program cost: $2,000 plus CUNY tuition (4 credits). Program cost includes housing, meals and some excursions.
